Who Can Participate

NOKI – the Norwegian AI Olympiad – is open to students in upper secondary school (videregående skole) in Norway who are interested in artificial intelligence, problem-solving, and responsible technology.

The competition is designed to be inclusive and accessible to motivated students, regardless of prior experience in AI or programming.

School-Based Participation

Participation in NOKI takes place through schools. All students must be registered by their school in order to take part in the competition.

Each participating school is encouraged to:

  • Promote NOKI internally to eligible students
  • Assign a contact person (teacher or advisor) who will manage the registration and act as liaison
  • Optionally provide supervision or facilities for local participation during online rounds

Competition Format

NOKI’s national rounds are organised independently by NOKI from 2026. Participation is school-based, and the competition consists of four rounds — see Key Dates for when each round takes place.

  • Round 1 and Round 2 take place online through NOKI’s competition platform, Brunost, at brunost.ioai.no.
  • Round 3 and Round 4 are on-site rounds. Round 3 takes place in Bergen, and NOKI covers accommodation costs for invited participants. Round 4 is the national team selection, and its details will be announced.

Path to the International Team

Gold medalists from the national rounds are considered for Norway’s team at the International Olympiad in Artificial Intelligence (IOAI). Selected gold medalists join an 8-month preparation programme ahead of the following year’s IOAI.

Students in this preparation programme are exempt from Rounds 1–3 the following year — instead of competing again from the start, they train directly for Round 4, the national team selection.

Before Round 1

  1. Fill in the registration form on this page.
  2. Create a free account on NOKI's competition platform, Brunost, at brunost.ioai.no — you'll need this to take part.
  3. Closer to Round 1 (Week 48, 2026), we'll send registered students a link to the contest by email.
